Scientists made and tested a new artificial heart, and it could change lives

The artificial, 3D-printed heart is able to pump real liquid. Source: ETH Zürich/YouTube  We’ve heard of scientists growing organs in petri dishes. But now, a group of Swiss researchers are taking an alternative route: combining 3-D printing and soft robotics to develop a prosthetic heart. The heart is squishy, flexible and able to pump actual liquids from its chambers, which is important since the heart is responsible for pumping our blood. And considering that doctors have performed at least 67,000heart transplants since 1988, there’s a great chance that people will want to use this invention in the future. In the United States, more than 4,000 people are on the waiting list to get a heart transplant. Source: ETH Zürich/YouTube “As a mechanical engineer, I would never have thought that I would ever hold a soft heart in my hands,” Anastasios Petrou, a doctoral student at the Product Development Group Zurich, said in a release. “I’m now so fascinated…

Understanding Business Models (Part 1) by Strive Masiyiwa

__”When did you first see the opportunity?” When I first started Econet Wireless, I travelled to South Africa to meet the senior leadership of one of the leading mobile network companies. I was looking for investment into our business. I did the customary pitch and offered them 40% of my business. For some of you who have seen Shark Tank on Kwese Inc, it was a similar experience! Their CEO balked at my price. “No way!” he said. “That is just too expensive!” For several weeks we haggled over the price but we could not bridge the gap, and we decided to go our separate ways. More than 10 years later, I ran into the chairman of that company at a reception, and he pulled me aside and said, “I really regret that we did not do that deal with you. Now I realize that your business was worth a…

Bill Gates Shares His Success Story As He Recommends 3 Promising Fields Anyone that Wants to Make a Big Impact in the 21st Century Must Venture into.

Congratulations! You’ve just accomplished something I never managed to do—earn a college degree. Between your commencement speaker and every aunt and uncle at your graduation party, I am sure you are getting a lot of advice. At the risk of piling on, I thought I would share a few thoughts. New college graduates often ask me for career advice. I was lucky to be in my early 20s when the digital revolution was just getting under way, and Paul Allen and I had the chance to help shape it. (Which explains my lack of a college degree—I left school because we were afraid the revolution would happen without us.) If I were starting out today and looking for the same kind of opportunity to make a big impact in the world, I would consider three fields. One is artificial intelligence. We have only begun to tap into all the ways…

Honda unveils new Accord 2018 Model as midsize cars fall out of favor

The latest version of Honda’s venerable Accord midsize car is lower, wider, lighter and sleeker than its predecessor, and the company says it’s faster and handles better. But no matter how nice it looks, how well it drives or how big it is inside, it’ll be a tough sell with U.S. buyers who are migrating by the thousands from sedans to SUVs and trucks. Honda is hoping the new Accord, due in showrooms in the fall, will reverse the car’s sales decline. Through June, sales fell 5.5 percent compared with last year as U.S. buyers shun midsize cars in favor of SUVs. Sales of all midsize cars combined were down nearly 18 percent during the first half of the year, and the midsize sedan’s share of the market has dropped from 16 percent five years ago to just under 11 percent, according to Kelley Blue Book. Still, Honda sold more than…

Richard Branson Shares How The Goals and To Do List He Set in 1972 Helped Him Succeed in Life

It’s fun taking a walk down memory lane, and seeing how far we’ve come and what we’ve achieved. My friend Kenny Kemp recently uncovered this little gem, from my 1972 diary. to do list 1972.jpg Image from Virgin.com On November 6th, as a 22-year-old, I made the following to-do list: 1.     Learn to fly 2.     Look after me, you, boat 3.     Entertain everybody with me 4.     Invite nice people back 5.     Start getting the small house together at The Manor 6.     Start buying odds and sods for The Manor 7.     Work with me on projects/sort me out 8.     More shops to be found Records_Manor_studio_Richard.jpg Image from virgin.com As you can see, the bullet points range from lofty ambitions like learning to fly and opening more Virgin Records stores, to inviting people around and buying…

Reflection: Don’t lose sight of the things that matter most… __”Treasure your family love, love for your spouse, love for your friends. Treat everyone well and stay friendly with your neighbors.” (Attributed to Steve Jobs, founder of Apple). Most people would agree that Steve Jobs is probably the greatest entrepreneur who ever lived, and the greatest tech innovator of our times. The company he founded, Apple, is the most valuable company in the world, with a market value today of nearly $750bn. Now this is more than twice the size of the South African economy, and almost a third of the GDP of the whole of continental Africa! Apple is a phenomenal company, and will no doubt be amongst the top contenders for the first “trillion-dollar company” (expected within five years). Steve Jobs died in 2011 at age 56, after contracting a very aggressive form of cancer. As one of…
